September 2023: Supporting Teachers, Celebrating Successes, and Creating New Opportunities

As we wrap up September, the start of the school year brings reflection on the evolving landscape of education and the support systems needed for teachers and staff to thrive. Here’s a recap of key updates from Dover Schools:

A Message of Support for Educators

During a heartfelt moment, I received a call from my niece as she prepared for her first back-to-school night as a student teacher. Her excitement and nerves reminded me of how teaching has transformed over the past two decades.

Today’s educators face a range of challenges that go beyond the classroom:

Raising test scores and closing achievement gaps

Implementing new programs and understanding policies

Ensuring student safety

Navigating societal shifts and negative perceptions of teaching

To all Dover teachers and staff, both new and veteran: We see you. We support you. We believe in you. Your success directly impacts the success of our students and the entire district. Please reach out to the administrative team whenever you need support or guidance—we are here to help.

As the month comes to a close, I encourage you to take a moment to celebrate the victories—big or small—that occur in your classrooms each day.

Opportunities for Growth and Professional Development

On the agenda for approval tonight are exciting opportunities to support the growth of future educators and staff:

New Student Teachers and Teach in America Candidates: These programs provide practical, hands-on experiences for aspiring educators, helping them build skills and confidence in the classroom.

Dover’s First Nursing Practicum: This initiative supports a current employee in obtaining their school nursing credentials, marking another first for the district as we invest in our staff’s professional development.

These efforts are part of Dover’s ongoing commitment to fostering the next generation of educators and supporting the growth of our team.

Looking Ahead

As we continue the school year, let’s remain focused on collaboration, support, and celebrating the everyday wins that make a difference in our classrooms and community. Together, we’re creating an environment where teachers, staff, and students can succeed.
